While you’re on holiday on São Miguel, you might also want to consider visiting some of the surrounding, smaller islands. We want to tell you about one of our favourite trips today. We liked the tour so much, that we flew from São Miguel all the way to Terceira just to do it again. Short trips to the islands are easy to book through the SATA, who fly out to the islands several times a day. The flights are not particularly expensive and you can reach the central group of islands within half an hour. Alternatively and even more picturesque, but slower, are trips on the ferry, or, if you can afford it, with a chartered ship.
No matter how you decide to make your way to Terceira, we highly recommend a sail boat or motor boat trip with “Sailtours Yacht Charter” starting from Angra do Heroísmo. Depending on how long you want to spend on the boat you can choose the length of your trip. You can also pick from a variety of main activities to do on the trip, we always chose snorkeling and one or another sporty activity:
- snorkeling
- sports (Stand up paddeling, Boards, …, anything you can do by or at the back of the boat)
- fishing
- just relaxing on board
- having great conversations
If you enjoy snorkeling, we would like to especially recommend visiting the rays. You should take a waterproof camera and, if possible, an under-water lamp. This is not entirely necessary, but it gave us the necessary “courage” to be able to fully enjoy visiting the rays. I’ll give you a short impression for you to better understand what I mean:
We especially enjoyed the conversations we had with the crew, who speak perfect English. Nowhere else have we been able to learn so much about the people, the islands, their festivals and their emotions and fears.
